Dakar, Senegal – West Africa

On the other side of the Atlantic (from the North American perspective), on the coast of Senegal in their capital city Dakar, there is an area called Pointe des Almadies. Around the corner from the embassy of the United States and the embassies of a few other countries, Pointe des Almadies is a strip of resturants and vendors offering souvenirs, incredible views and fresh seafood. This unassuming area easily became one of my favorite places to visit on the Cape Verde peninsula. It’s on the stretch of sea that is also home to the furthest point west on the African mainland.

The Senegalese people have a concept called Teranga, which many describe as hospitality but it’s much more than that. It’s a spirit of inclusion, they go out of their way to make sure everyone feels welcome.
